Dukeâs Riley Leonard, Alabama native, enters transfer portal
Duke quarterback Riley Leonard entered the transfer portal Wednesday.
The junior from Fairhope, Alabama, made the announcement on Instagram with three words: Thank you, Duke. The move comes just two days after his coach Mike Elko was introduced as the new head coach at Texas A&M.
A message sent to Leonard was not immediately returned.
Leonard’s junior campaign was marred with injuries, but the quarterback took the nation by storm in Week 1 with a win against Clemson. In that game, he threw for 175 yards and rushed for 98 more. However, a Week 5 ankle injury against Notre Dame was re-injured in his return against Florida State. He then suffered an additional injury to his other foot against Louisville.
The 6-4, 210-pound quarterback has thrown for 4,450 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 27 career games with the Blue Devils. Leonard also rushed for 1,224 rushing yards and 19 more touchdowns.
Per Chris Hummer of 247Sports, Leonard enters the portal with a “do not contact” tag.
As the Blue Devil starter in 2022, he completed 64 percent of his passes for 2,967 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also ran for 699 yards and 13 scores. Entering his second season as a starter, Leonard was receiving early Heisman Trophy and NFL draft pick buzz.
“It’s insane how two years can make a difference in your life,” he told AL.com in July. “Now that I’m sticking to one sport it’s a lot easier to try to be better and focus on that one thing. I can’t believe the situation I’m in.”
At Fairhope High School, Leonard threw for more than 2,200 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior and ran for 517 yards and five scores. Ultimately, he picked Duke over Nebraska, Vanderbilt and Syracuse among others.
He was just as impressive on the basketball court. Leonard averaged 20.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists as a senior. He also had 71 steals and finished his career with more than 2,000 points.
