Dual threat earns Week 14 Hollis Wright Birmingham Player of Week

An outstanding performance by a dual threat quarterback took top honors in Week 14 of the Hollis Wright Birmingham Player of the Week poll.

Ramsay quarterback Kam Keenan is the second straight Ram to earn the top spot, rolling to 72 percent of the 8,034 votes cast in the poll. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Keenan completed 15-of-23 throws for 245 yards and 3 touchdowns in No. 2 Ramsay’s 40-27 win at Moody. The junior also ran for 78 yards and a pair of scores in the win.

Running back Ashton Ashford picked up the player of the week honors last week.

Parker standout Na’eem Offord finished second in the voting after he ran for 3 touchdowns and scored on a 45-yard punt return in a 35-20 win over Gadsden City. Offord, a 6-2, 174-pound junior, finished with 125 yards on four punt returns.

Clay-Chalkville quarterback Jaylen Mbakwe was third in the voting after he threw for 316 yards and 5 TDs in the Cougars’ 44-27 win at Muscle Shoals. Mbakwe completed 21-of-27 passes for Class 6A second-ranked Clay-Chalkville.

The Cougars host Parker in the semifinals on Friday.

Voting this week for a statewide player of the week from semifinal action begins on Sunday and will run through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.

In Week 14, more than 22,500 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
