Dry shampoo recall: Dove, Suave, Tresemme recalled due to possible cancer-causing chemicals
Several popular dry shampoo products are part of a recall due to potentially elevated levels of a cancer-causing chemical, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced.
Unilever U.S. issued the voluntary product recall to specific lot codes of dry shampoo aerosol products produced prior to October 2021. The recall covers select products from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head), and TRESemmé and is due to the potential presence of high levels of benzene.
The FDA classifies benzene as a human carcinogen and exposure can occur by inhalation, orally and through the skin, resulting in cancers such as leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow. The level of benzene found in the products would not be expected to cause adverse health conditions but the FDA said the recall was conducted “out of an abundance of caution.”
No health issues related to the products have been reported, according to Unilever.
