Drunk male drives onto Leeds Elementary School track with students on path, officials say

A male is in custody after authorities say he drove onto the Leeds Elementary School track while students were on the path Wednesday.

“Earlier today, there was a disruption on campus where an unknown person drove onto the track,” reads a post on the Facebook page for Leeds Elementary School.

“The disruption was quickly addressed by administration, staff, school resource officers, and the Leeds Police Department. At no time were any students or staff members hurt during this incident.”

Leeds police said the suspect, only identified as a male, was taken into custody. The department said there was no active threat to the school.

Efforts by AL.com to reach the department for further comment were unsuccessful.

Leeds Mayor David Miller told CBS 42 that the driver was intoxicated and drove onto the track while students were on the path.

The suspect was charged with reckless endangerment, the mayor said.

Efforts to reach Miller were not immediately successful.

Leeds Elementary School encouraged concerned parents to contact school officials.

“Our team responded promptly, following established protocols to ensure the safety of everyone on campus,” the school’s post stated. “The situation has been resolved, and we are continuing to work with the appropriate authorities to review and address the matter.”
