Driver stopping for turtle on Florida highway causes multi-car pileup

A kindhearted motorist stopped on a busy Florida Panhandle highway Tuesday morning to avoid running over a turtle, but in the process caused a multi-car pileup.

According to the Walton County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office, the motorist stopped on Highway 331 south, “a decision that caused a chain reaction affecting multiple vehicles including a large semi, which SURPRISE, doesn’t exactly stop on a dime,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a Facebook post.

A dashcam video from the 18-wheeler shows the pileup, with a black pickup stopped in the left lane with its flashers on, initiating the chain reaction.

Incredibly, there were no serious injuries — despite the fact the motorist who stopped for the turtle was out of his vehicle and standing next to it when the 18-wheeler hit it.

And the turtle survived.

The sheriff’s office discouraged drivers from stopping to avoid or assist an animal on a busy roadway, due to the risks to themselves and other drivers.

“We all can do better to protect the wildlife and natural inhabitants of our great state,” the WCSO wrote. “Residents and visitors alike should marvel at the many species that call Florida home.

“Just preferably not in the middle of the road.”
