Driver severely beaten by angry mob after striking, killing woman in Atmore
An angry mob outside an Atmore bar severely beat a man after he struck and killed a woman on Highway 31 Saturday, according to both Atmore police and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Atmore police were called to the The Tavern sports bar just before midnight Saturday night after a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the woman, 24-year-old Hannah Annette Martin of Atmore, with severe injuries. Officers began CPR and Martin was ultimately transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
The driver of the 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe which struck Martin, 45-year-old Kenneth Elbert Harrison of Silverhill, pulled into the parking lot of The Tavern after the accident. An unknown number of bar patrons assaulted Harrison, beaten him so severely he had to be airlifted by helicopter to a local trauma center. His condition as of Monday afternoon was unknown.
Atmore police Sgt. Darrell McCann said Martin had parked her vehicle across the highway from The Tavern and was crossing the roadway when she was struck by Harrison’s vehicle. The impact sent her into The Tavern parking lot. Harrison then pulled his vehicle into the parking lot.
McCann said investigators are reviewing surveillance footage to determine those who were involved in the assault on Harrison. ALEA, meanwhile, is investigating the crash which killed Martin.
