Driver of 18-wheeler charged in DUI crash that injured woman, 2 children in west Jefferson County
A Birmingham truck driver is behind bars after a weekend traffic crash that injured a woman and two young children.
Rodney DeWayne Gildersleeve, 47, is charged with first-degree assault, driving under the influence and obstruction of governmental operations.
The wreck happened Saturday night on Bluff Ridge Road in western Jefferson County.
Jefferson County sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money said Gildersleeve was driving an 18-wheeler traveling north in the southbound lane of the roadway. He struck a pickup truck in the southbound lane.
The driver, a 30-year-old woman, was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Her two children, ages 2 and 4, were taken to Children’s of Alabama where they were treated and released. Both were in child safety seats, Money said.
A 30-year-old female passenger was not injured.
Gildersleeve was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 12:24 a.m. Sunday. He is being held without bond.
The investigation is ongoing.
