Driver indicted in 2022 hit-and-run that killed bicyclist in downtown Birmingham
A suspect has been indicted in a 2022 hit-and-run that killed a 49-year-old bicyclist in downtown Birmingham.
A Jefferson County grand jury in April issued two indictments against 36-year-old James Louise Green Jr. on reckless manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident, according to court records made public Wednesday.
Green is charged in the Oct. 9, 2022, death of 49-year-old Taurus Lamond Hearns Sr., a father and grandfather.
The crash happened at 7:21 p.m. that Sunday on First Avenue South at 18th Street near Railroad Park.
Hearns was riding a bicycle when he was struck. The driver – now identified as Green – left the scene.
Hearns was taken to UAB Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 7:45 p.m.
The indictment states that Green caused Hearns’ death by “failing to maintain a reasonable and prudent speed.”
Green was initially arrested on March 13, 2023. He remains out of jail on $45,000 bond.
A trial date has not yet been announced.
