Driver in wrong-way Hoover wreck that killed woman flees on foot, is struck on I-65

A wrong-way, head-on crash in Hoover Monday evening left a woman dead.

Police say the driver of the SUV that struck the woman’s car fled the scene and ran onto Interstate 65 during evening rush hour traffic where he was hit by another vehicle and critically injured.

The first wreck happened about 6 p.m. on Valleydale Road at the I-65 overpass.

Hoover police Capt. Keith Czeskleba said the man, whose identity has not been released, was driving a Ford Expedition northbound in the southbound lanes on Valleydale Road when he struck the Camry head-on.

The driver of the Expedition fled the scene on foot, running onto I-65. As he attempted to cross the southbound lanes, he was hit by an oncoming Mitsubishi Outlander.

He was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Both the driver and the passenger of the Camry from the first incident were also taken to UAB Hospital.

The female passenger was pronounced dead on arrival at UAB. The driver is being treated for serious injuries.

The driver of the Outlander remained on the scene of the second crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
