Driver in hit-and-run that killed woman in Foley says he thought he hit a deer
A 30-year-old woman is dead and a 42-year-old man in jail after a hit-and-run incident in Foley Thursday night.
Foley police said Friday officers responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle about 8:30 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of County Road 65 and Airport Road. The vehicle involved had fled the scene.
Police and fire personnel along with Baldwin County deputies arrived at the scene to find a female, later identified as 30-year-old Nycole Tasheena Tate of Foley, dead at the scene.
Investigators began working the case and, about 11 p.m., 42-year-old Kaleb Ryan Owens, called 911 to report he had been involved in a collision and thought he had struck a deer.
Investigators went to Owens’ home to interview him and to examine his 2008 BMW. The damages found on the vehicle were determined to be consistent with the nature of the collision and the evidence found at the scene.
Owens was initially cooperative, police said, but ultimately requested an attorney. Investigators determined there was enough evidence to support probable cause and Owns was taken into custody.
As of Friday afternoon, Owens remained in the Baldwin County Jail, charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident causing death, with bond set at $20,000.
If convicted, Owens faces a jail sentence of up to 10 years and a fine of up to $15,000.
