Driver found fatally shot when police respond to traffic crash in Bessemer

An investigation is underway after a young man was shot to death Friday night in Bessemer.

Police officers were dispatched shortly after 8:20 p.m. to a report of a wreck in the 1600 block of Berkley Avenue.

When they arrived, they discovered the victim had been shot, said Det. Justin Burmeister. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

Burmeister said there are few details surrounding the deadly incident. Detectives were working Saturday to continue their investigation.

No arrests have been made.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

He is Bessemer’s sixth homicide this year. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 137 homicides, including the six in Bessemer.
