Driver dies after north Alabama police chase

A driver was pronounced dead in Lawrence County early Monday after hitting a tree during a police chase.

An officer tried to stop a driver for a traffic violation near Alabama 67 and Danville Road at about 2:40 a.m. Monday, according to the Decatur Police Department. The driver did not stop, and officers pursued the car into Lawrence County.

“During the pursuit, the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree. The driver was pronounced deceased on scene,” according to the police statement.

The accident happened on Jefferson Street in Courtland, according to the department.

An investigation is underway by Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and the name of the driver is being withheld pending notification of family.
