Driver charged in death of teen passenger killed in crash after Lipscomb police chase

A 24-year-old Bessemer man has been charged in the death of his teen passenger who was killed in a traffic crash following a police pursuit in Lipscomb last month.

Jarvis Terrell Owens, 24, is charged with murder, first-degree assault and attempting to elude. Killed in the Feb. 16 wreck was 18-year-old Hajsun Jermale Hudson Jr., a Bessemer City High School student.

Owens was taken into custody Tuesday. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 12:02 p.m. and remains held without bond.

The crash happened at 11:54 a.m. that Friday on Sixth Avenue North at Fifth Street North in Lipscomb.

Authorities said Lipscomb police officers tried to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle for speeding and reckless driving, but the driver of the Dodge Challenger – Owens – did not stop.

There was a short pursuit before officers called off the chase. A short time later, they came upon the wreck.

Authorities said the vehicle struck a tree and then overturned.

Hudson was taken to UAB Hospital where he was removed from life support the following day.

A juvenile passenger was critically injured, for which Owens is charged with assault. A second juvenile in the car was not injured.

Hudson’s grandmother, Edna Broaden, said her grandson was an “A Honor Roll” student and was out of school that day for e-learning.

She said the family was devastated by his death.

In addition to going to school, Hudson worked at Burger King in Five Points West.

“He was a very nice young man,’’ she said. “Everybody’s called me to tell me how respectful he was.”

Hudson was the oldest of three siblings.

“He was a good, kind-hearted person,’ Broaden said. “It hurts us very bad.”
