Drive-by shooting on busy Birmingham road leaves 1 dead, 1 injured
A drive-by shooting in Birmingham’s Gate City community left one man dead, and another injured.
The shots rang out just after 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the 7500 block of Georgia, a busy roadway in front of the Georgia Market neighborhood store.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said two men were sitting in front of the store in a white sedan. Police arrived to find one of the men unresponsive inside of the vehicle.
A second was found with a gunshot wound that is not believed to be life-threatening.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported both men to UAB Hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead.
Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation shows that both men were inside the sedan when another vehicle pulled up alongside them and opened fire. The exact number of shots fired wasn’t immediately known, but police marked at least 11 shell casings in the middle of Georgia Road.
No suspects are in custody and police are asking witnesses to come forward.
“This is a heavily populated area and populated area, and people may be hesitant to come forward,’’ Fitzgerald said. He said tips to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and urged witnesses to use that tipline to provide them with information.
“Most anyone that’s familiar with the Georgia Road area in Gate City, they know that Georgia Road is a connector to just about any of your major areas on the eastside,’’ he said. “This is a very busy thoroughfare. People are always walking in the area. We’re extremely fortunate we didn’t have more lives lost.”
The victim is the city’s 114th homicide this year. Of those, seven have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County there have been 154 homicides, including the 114 in Birmingham
