The 12-team College Football Playoff era is finally here and the matchups don’t disappoint. It’s a bit startling to see Clemson in the playoff given how they started the year, but does that mean they’ll get blown off the field by Texas? I’m not so sure.
Oddsmakers and bettors at DraftKings aren’t giving the Tigers much of a chance. Clemson is a 12-point underdog, which is the biggest spread of the CFP first round. If I had to win my first bet, I’d take Texas -6.5 in the first half to avoid a backdoor cover by Clemson.
Texas’ defense allows just 3.3 points per game in the first half over the past three games (5.0 ppg on the season). I think the nerves will get to both teams early and that will lead to a sloppy first half, but more so for Clemson, which hasn’t faced a defense this good all season. The only time they faced a defense nearly as good as Texas’ was in the season-opening 34-3 loss to Georgia.
