Downtown Tuscaloosa bar closes after 20 years in business

The Filling Station, located at 411 23rd Ave. in the Temerson Square area of downtown Tuscaloosa, has permanently closed.

The bar, which opened in 2003, actually closed its doors late last year, according to a post on the venue’s Facebook page.

“It’s been a great Run Tuscaloosa!! Thanks for the memories, but we are Out!!” the Facebook post says. “2003-2023…Filling Station…R.I.P.”

Signage is gone from the front exterior, and if you look through the front window, you’ll only see the built-in furniture and bar, without any décor that previously adorned the brick walls.

Sharing the post on their own feeds, several former employees shared thoughts about their personal experiences.

Logan Lawrence Lemmond, who worked at the bar from 2014 to 2016, reflected on the social media app while sharing the news. “Sad Day,” the Hartselle native wrote. “Was a bouncer, bartender, and patron of this bar throughout my college years. Helped renovate it in 2015. Have some of my fondest memories inside of these walls. Some of my closest friends in the world that I still hang out with to this day worked at this bar together. Certifiably the end of an era for me.”

Austin Prince, who worked at the bar starting summer 2014 until August 2016, also shared some thoughts on the closure via Facebook. “Sad to see it go!! I started as bouncer, followed by a bartender, and was a frequent flyer at this bar starting as a freshman,” he said. Prince is a Clearwater, Fla., native currently living in Shreveport, La. “I even had the opportunity to help renovate filling station a summer with many great individuals. I’ve made some of the best memories at this bar.”

Several customers and former employees took to the comments section under The Filling Station’s original post, to react and reminisce.

“Oh no, this just made me so sad!” Facebook user Arista S. Garcia commented under the post.

“Was fortunate enough to get to see her one last time back in December when I was passing through,” Josh Bell said.

Holly Todd Taylor said, “we had some good nights in here a lifetime ago!!”

“Had some of the best nights of my life in that bar… Tuscaloosa will miss you!” Jessica Robinson said.

“Great memories here,” Preston Nolen said. “It was a fun place to get together and a even better place to work.”

The bar opened in winter 2003, under original owner Marcus Williams. The concept was to open a venue for “a little older crowd,” Williams told The Tuscaloosa News. The space was previously occupied by Ground Zero, a coffee shop that closed in April 2023.
