Downtown Birmingham coffee shop closes without warning

The downtown Birmingham location of Revelator Coffee Company closed without warning this weekend, according to social media posts and signs taped to the shop’s front windows.

Handwritten notices announced that the coffee shop was “closed forever” and said employees had been given no notice or severance. The employees thanked customers for their love and support and apologized for the inconvenience.

Revelator Coffee Company operates a handful of coffee shops across the South.

In addition to the location across from McWane Science Center in Birmingham, the website also lists shops in New Orleans and the campus of Birmingham-Southern College.

The downtown location was the company’s first, according to its website. It also opened a 15,000-square foot roasting facility in Birmingham in 2015.

In a 2015 interview, the company’s spokeswoman announced plans for locations all across the South, including Chattanooga, Atlanta and Nashville. Revelator sold craft coffee roasted in small batches.

Officials from the company have not yet responded to requests for comment.
