Doug Jones worlds collide: Senator, actor meet and joke about BBQ, bourbon

Doug Jones met Doug Jones, as worlds collided in the Doug Jones-verse at Alabama Comic Con last weekend.

Celebrities and fans converged on the BJCC in downtown Birmingham for the annual convention that drew big names like Ron Pearlman, Giancarlo Esposito, Lou Diamond Phillips, Mick Foley and many more.

Also on the guest list: Actor Doug Jones, who is best known for his collaborations with Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro in movies like “Hellboy,” “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” and the 2017 Oscar winner “The Shape of Water.”

Jones often portrays non-human creatures using heavy prosthetic makeup and costumes, such as his turn as The Amphibian Man in “The Shape of Water,” the Pale Man in “Pan’s Labyrinth” or William “Billy” Butcherson in the popular family film “Hocus Pocus” and its sequel.

Fans of his work could buy a ticket and pay for photo ops with the Hollywood veteran at Comic Con, while some of us wondered if a meeting with Alabama’s own Doug Jones would actually happen

Sure enough, the former U.S. senator posted a video on social media of him meeting the actor at the convention in Birmingham, as the two engaged in some playful banter about sharing names.

“Folks, I’m Doug Jones,” the former senator said, before the actor interrupted, “Wait, wait, wait. Hey, hey, hey. I’m Doug Jones.”

“This guy has stole my thunder for the last three or four years,” the Alabama Doug Jones joked, while the other insisted the opposite was true, saying “Have I been in Washington D.C. making a name for myself? No.”

They plugged Alabama Comic Con, with the actor calling it “great fun” and complimenting the city. “I’ve loved Birmingham. It’s my first time in Birmingham. I’ve been in your lovely state before, but never Birmingham. That Southern charm is a real thing.”

Sen. Jones asked if the actor had sampled any good barbecue, which he hadn’t. “We can get past that, maybe,” the Alabama Jones said. “How about good bourbon? Have you had some good bourbon? You’ve gotta have some good bourbon, right?”

The actor said he didn’t drink alcohol and asked if he’d lost his “Doug Jones privileges,” pointing out he’s a Northerner who grew up in Indiana.

Sen. Jones then revealed a baseball he asked the actor to sign, noting he’d also gotten an autograph from former Major League relief pitcher Doug Jones, who passed away in 2021. He planned to display the two signed baseballs side by side.

“Doug, it has been a delight,” the former senator said after receiving the gift, to which the actor responded, “An absolute delight to finally meet the man who is destroying my social media.”

Unless you’re a die-hard film fan, you’ve likely seen the actor without ever knowing it, given he’s typically disguised in layers of makeup as he inhabits monsters, creatures, zombies and other otherworldly characters in films like “Batman Returns,” “Mimic,” “Mystery Men,” “Men in Black II” and “Lady in the Water.” The actor also has appeared on television shows like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Tales from the Crypt,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and “Star Trek: Discovery.”

Born in Fairfield, the other Doug Jones served as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 1997 to 2001. Jones defeated former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore in 2017 to become the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate in 25 years. He won a special election for the Senate seat previously held by Jeff Sessions, who became U.S. Attorney General. Jones served as a U.S. senator from 2018 to 2021.

According to his website, the former senator is currently acting as legal counsel with ArentFox Schiff, is a Distinguished Senior Fellow for the Center for American Progress and is honorary chair for the Right Side of History PAC. Jones also frequently appears as an analyst for various cable news networks.
