Dothan woman killed in front of her children in domestic shooting; ex-boyfriend jailed

A 35-year-old Dothan mother was shot to death, and her ex-boyfriend is behind bars.

Dothan police received a 911 call about 11 p.m. Friday reporting a shooting at a home in the 2700 block of East Cottonwood Road.

When officers got to the home, there were several children inside. One of them directed police to a wounded Shannette Yvonne Colbert, who was on the floor.

Lt. Scott Owens said officers started CPR as well as wound treatment until Dothan Fire paramedics arrived. The efforts were unsuccessful, and Colbert was pronounced dead.

Investigators learned that Colbert had been in a previous relationship with 42-year-old Phillip Lee McAdoo, who lives in North Carolina. An argument between the two led to McAdoo pulling a gun and firing multiple rounds at Colbert, Owens said.

The children were able to give police McAdoo’s description. Responding officers spotted him and pulled over. He was taken into custody.

Police have charged McAdoo with capital murder. He is being held without bond in the Houston County Jail.

“Everyone deserves relationships free from domestic violence,’’ Owens said.
