Don’t be alarmed by increased military presence in Mobile next week
Remain calm. All is well.
That in essence is the message from the Alabama National Guard and Mobile County’s Emergency Management Agency as the National Guard and partners prepare to hold large training exercises in the Mobile area next week.
The exercises, set for April 28-May 3, are part of the State of Alabama’s hurricane response preparedness, according to the National Guard. The drills will incorporate the all-hazards plan and will include the emergency management agency and other state response agencies.
The agencies are putting out notices of the upcoming exercises.
“The public should not be alarmed by an influx of uniformed Alabama Army National Guard personnel and vehicles or by National Guard or local healthcare personnel in personal protective equipment,” the Mobile County EMA said in a release. “This is a training exercise, not an actual emergency.”
The exercises will largely center around Gulf States Fairground, the Mobile County EMA complex on Zeigler Boulevard and local medical facilities.
The public can expect to see increased military presence, military helicopters, HAZMAT training and “other relevant scenarios,” according to the National Guard.
“All scenarios will be EXERCISES and do not pose any threat to the public,” the National Guard wrote in a release. “Do not be alarmed if you see additional military personnel around the city; exercises like this help ensure that we are ready to respond in the case of any natural disaster.”
Updates on the exercises will be posted to the Alabama National Guard Facebook and X accounts.
