Donaldson prison inmate serving life for murder dies of natural illness at Birmingham hospital

A state prison inmate died Tuesday, weeks after he was hospitalized for a natural illness.

Mark Len Johnson, 54, was serving a life sentence at William Donaldson Correctional Facility for a 1993 conviction out of Sumter County.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Johnson was hospitalized at St. Vincent’s on June 12 for treatment of a diagnosed natural disease.

He died at the hospital at 9:56 p.m. Tuesday.

Johnson is the 18th Donaldson inmate to die this year. In 2022, 40 inmates died at the prison.
