Donald Trump’s approval rating sinks lower but new poll shows a silver lining
President Donald Trump’s approval rating has gone further underwater, according to a new poll.
But there is a silver lining in the new Morning Consult survey measuring Trump’s favorability.
More than half of respondents — 51% — disapprove of Trump’s job performance while his approval rating is 46% — a small drop from the 48% who approved of the president’s job performance two weeks ago, according to the Morning Consult poll released Tuesday.
Trump enjoyed a 52% approval rating at the start of his second term — a number matching his record-high from March 2017.
But amid the grim numbers, Trump is actually doing better now than at a similar point in his first term, the poll found.
While Trump had an identical 51% disapproval rating at around the same point of his first term that he has now, his approval rating was even worse then.
At the similar point in his first term, Trump had a 44% approval rating — two percentage points lower than now.
The new Economist/YouGov poll, also released Tuesday, showed similar numbers on Trump’s popularity.
That survey showed Trump underwater by 4 percentage points; 45% of respondents somewhat or strongly approved of the president’s job performance while 51% said they somewhat or strongly disapproved of how Trump is doing his job.
