Donald Trump insulted by reporter’s ‘nasty question’ on ‘TACO’ tariffs: ‘You call that chickening out?’
President Donald Trump took offense Wednesday to a new Wall Street trading strategy derived from his approach to tariffs, calling a reporter’s question about the TACO trade “nasty.”
The TACO trade was coined by a Financial Times columnist who insisted Trump Always Chickens Out in implementing his tariffs, causing traders to sell assets on the tariff announcements and buy back when tariffs are revoked.
“They’re saying Trump always chickens out on your tariff threats, and that’s why markets are higher. What’s your response to that?” the reporter asked.
“I’ve never heard that. You mean because I reduced China from 145% … down to 100 and then down to another number? … And because I gave the European Union a 50% tariff … and they called up and said, ‘please, let’s meet right now?” Trump responded.
“You call that chickening out? Because we have $14 trillion now invested … when [former President Joe] Biden didn’t have practically anything. This country was dying,” the president continued.
“We had a country people didn’t think was gonna survive and you ask a nasty question like that? It’s called negotiation, you set a number …” Trump said.
The president warned the reporter not talk like that again.
“That’s a nasty question,” he said. “To me, that’s the nastiest question.”
