Donald Trump in Alabama: âWe need one more indictmentâ to win this election
Former president Donald Trump isn’t backing away from his legal troubles despite a string of historic indictments that threaten his bid to return to the White House.
Speaking to the summer meeting of the Alabama Republican Party, Trump blamed his most recent indictment on “crooked Joe Biden” and “radical thugs,” but said it is ultimately helping his reelection bid.
“Every time they file an indictment, we go way up in the polls,” Trump said to the sold-out crowd in Montgomery “We only need one more indictment to close out this election.”
Trump said the indictments represented “fake charges” and an “outrageous criminalization of political speech.”
“They are trying to make it illegal to question the results of a bad election,” Trump said. “If you can’t challenge a rigged election…you really don’t have a country.”
On Thursday, Trump pleaded not guilty to charges he plotted to overturn the 2020 election in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. He was indicted on four felony counts, including conspiracy to defraud the nation.
In June, Trump was indicted on felony charges that he intentionally hoarded hundreds of classified documents at his Florida estate and obstructed the government’s efforts to recover them. And, in March, prosecutors in New York charged Trump with falsifying business records as part of an alleged effort to cover up hush payments to a porn actor over an alleged affair.
