Dolphins vs. Chiefs wild-card playoff odds preview

Coach Andy Reid’s Chiefs (11-6) are making their league-best ninth-straight postseason appearance and are aiming to claim the NFL’s first back-to-back Super Bowl championships since the 2003-04 New England Patriots.

K.C., however, struggled down the regular season’s home stretch, winning four of its final eight games after beating the Dolphins 21-14 in a Week 9 matchup in Frankfurt, Germany.

A drop in offensive production has been a major sticking point as Patrick Mahomes and Co. are averaging more than a full touchdown fewer per game (21.8 ppg) than they did a season ago (29.2).

The K.C. defense, however, has stepped things up, ranking second during the regular season with an average of 17.3 points allowed per contest.

Miami (11-6) has also faced adversity in recent weeks.

After leading the AFC East for much of the season, the Dolphins lost three of their final five games — including a 21-14 Week 18 home defeat to the Buffalo Bills — and were forced to settle for the AFC’s sixth seed.

That necessitates a road playoff opener in frigid and windy Kansas City, where Saturday’s high temperature isn’t expected to climb out of the single digits.

It’s a tough spot for the South Floridians who ranked second in scoring (29.2 points per game) during the regular season behind league leaders Tua Tagovailoa (4,624 passing yards) and ex-Chief Tyreek Hill (1,799 receiving yards, 13 TD grabs).

The Miami defense finished 22nd, allowing an average of 23.0 points per outing, and is now dealing with an untimely late-season spate of injuries that has hit the linebacker and safety positions particularly hard.

In Saturday’s matchup, the Chiefs are a consensus 4.5-point favorite (-225 moneyline) with a game total hovering around 44 points.

Dolphins vs. Chiefs Wild Card playoff best bet: Game total under 43.5 points (-112 or better)

We touched on the Chiefs’ offensive issues above, and the numbers were even worse against upper-echelon competition this season as Kansas City averaged only 18.8 points in its five games (1-4 record) against playoff qualifiers.

For the season as a whole, the Chiefs had a league-most-tying 12 games come in under the total.

Meanwhile, it’s a stunningly similar tale of the tape for the high-powered Dolphins, who went 1-5 (0-4 away from home) and averaged just 17.7 points against the six playoff teams they faced in the regular season.

Now factor in the brutal Saturday night weather forecast for K.C., and we’ll take the under.

Dolphins vs. Chiefs Wild Card playoff top player prop: Tyreek Hill under 86.5 receiving yards (-110 or better)

Dealing with nagging injuries, Hill tailed off late in the season, averaging 79.5 receiving yards per game after averaging a highly impressive 123.4 over his first 12 outings.

Of course, no team knows and respects what Hill can do better than the Chiefs after he spent the first six seasons in K.C. prior to his 2022 trade to Miami.

In the regular season, Kansas City limited opposing wideouts to an average of 124.6 yards per game, the fourth-best mark in the league).

So expect the Chiefs to prevent Hill from going wild Saturday — much like they did in Week 9 when Hill had his fourth-lowest yardage output (62 yards on eight catches and 10 targets) of the season.
