Dolphins move to keep Tua Tagovailoa through 2024

The Miami Dolphins are picking up their option on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s contract for the 2024 season. By exercising their option, the Dolphins are guaranteeing Tagovailoa a salary of $23.171 million for the 2024 season.

Tagovailoa joined Miami from Alabama as the fifth pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year, $30.275 million contract, and like the rookie deals of all first-round draft picks, it contained a team option for a fifth season.

The Dolphins had until May 1 to make their decision on the fifth-year option.

Although Tagovailoa led the NFL in passing-efficiency rating in the 2022 season, there appeared be some uncertainty about how the Dolphins would proceed with the quarterback after he missed five games because of concussions, including the final two regular-season games and a playoff contest.

“I can’t lie and say no,” Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said when asked if he was concerned about Tagovailoa’s durability during a press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine last week. “But it’s not something that is going to make us afraid to do something long-term with him. The one thing he’s had, he’s been banged up, but he always comes back and bounces back and plays hard and performs, so excited for his future. Excited for watching him doing all the work he’s been doing in the offseason right now to prepare for 2023, and he’s very excited to get back on the field with his teammates.”

Because he had completed three NFL seasons, Tagovailoa also was eligible for a new contract.
