Dollar General Alabama gear set on fire: ‘Stop, drop and Roll Tide!’

A fire started inside a Dollar General store Monday night when someone reportedly set the store’s display of Alabama Crimson Tide gear on fire.

The fire was reported by www.mobilealtraffic.com through its website and social media accounts.

According to the report, the fire was located at the Dollar General store on Lott Road just west of St. Stephens Road.

“A person set the Alabama (Crimson Tide) apparel section on fire,” according to the report. “Fire has possibly been extinguished by employees.”

Someone answering the phone at the Prichard Fire Department confirmed they had worked the fire, but said no report on the incident would be ready for 72 hours.

A call to the Prichard Police Department went unanswered.

As might be imagined, reaction on social media was both swift and frequently comical. A sampling:

  • “Not all heroes wear capes.”
  • “Somebody’s wedding is ruined.”
  • “They’ve still got 346 more (Dollar General’s) in Mobile.”
  • “What is the Harvey Updyke is this??? Suspect was heard saying “I just have too much Auburn in me.” (Note: Updyke died in 2020, so he has an alibi).

But perhaps the best of the reactions came from Facebooker Tatum Courington when he wrote:

“Stop, drop and Roll Tide!”
