Dog found gravely abused and neglected during domestic violence call in Jefferson County; suspect jailed

An investigation into a domestic violence call led to the rescue of a dog who authorities said had been egregiously abused.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies on Saturday, April 22, were called to the 300 block of Houston Road in Center Point to investigate a domestic violence incident.

While there, deputies found a small dog that was suffering from skin and fur loss and was gravely malnourished. Sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money said the dog had appeared to have endured long-term neglect and abuse.

The dog was taken in by the Greater Birmingham Humane Society. Money said it is unknow if the dog will survive the injuries.

Investigators determined the suspect in the domestic violence incident was also the suspect in the dog’s abuse, Money said.

The domestic violence victim was not seriously injured.

On Monday night, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies initiated a search for 31-year-old Derrias Waldrop.

They took Waldrop into custody in the parking lot of an apartment complex near the location of the initial investigation.

Waldrop is charged with third-degree domestic violence and first-degree animal cruelty. While he was being booked into the Jefferson County Jail, deputies found fentanyl in his possession.

He was then also charged with promoting prison contraband.

Waldrop’s bonds total $36,000.

Donations to assist with the medical care of this dog can be made to The Greater Birmingham Humane Society at www.gbhs.org/donate.

“Heinous acts such as this, will not be ignored,” said Sheriff Mark Pettway. “We are proud of the partnership we have built with The Greater Birmingham Humane Society and we will continue to work together to stop the abuse and neglect of defenseless animals.”
