Dog food recall: Throw away this brand; it may cause kidney failure

Purina is recalling certain bags of its dog food after reports it sickened two dogs.

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental prescription dry dog food is being recalled due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs; however, elevated levels can lead to health issues including vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, and excessive drooling and, in some cases, kidney failure.

Purina said it had received two separate confirmed cases of dogs showing signs of vitamin D toxicity after eating the product. Once taken off the diet, each of the dogs recovered.

The affected dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States by prescription only through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and other select retailers.

The recalled brand details are listed here.

The company is urging pet owners to throw out the food and discard it in an area where other animals cannot find it.

People can contact Purina by phone at 1-800-345-5678 from Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. CST or email at https://www.purina.com/contact-us, if they have questions or would like to request a refund.
