Does Auburn have a shot to land Georgia transfer DB and former 5-star AJ Harris?
Freshman defensive back and former 5-star AJ Harris is the most recent Georgia player to hit the transfer portal. News of Harris’ intentions to transfer came out Friday evening, with Harris seemingly acknowledging his decision in a social media response to one of his former teammates.
Before playing at Georgia, where he played in seven games and tallied eight tackles in his freshman season, Harris was a standout defensive back for the Central High School in Phenix City, just 40 minutes east of Auburn.
Harris ranked as the second-best cornerback of the 2023 recruiting cycle and the No. 1 prospect to come out of the state of Alabama, regardless of position. Harris hauled in offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas, USC and others during his recruitment.
At Central, Harris was a teammate to current 5-star Auburn commit Cam Coleman, whose recent flip from Texas A&M has helped define Hugh Freeze’s 2024 class.
All that said, it didn’t come as a surprise that Auburn was quickly tied to Harris as a possible transfer destination.
And more times than not, where there’s smoke, there’s fire.
In a post to his Instagram story, Coleman asked his former Central teammate to “come home.”
Meanwhile, Auburn running back Damari Alston reposted the news while commenting with the lock emoji, indicating that he believes the Tigers might have Harris “locked down.”
As social media smoke continued to build, CBS Sports’ Phillip Duke posted on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter, that Harris ending up at Auburn “looks like a real possibility.”
“And soon,” Duke added.
The addition of Harris would be a great one for Auburn’s room of defensive backs, which will be looking to replace the production of veterans DJ James, Nehemiah Pritchett and Jaylin Simpson — three guys who are set to go pro in 2024.
