Does Alabama football want to play in SEC Championship Game? Tyler Booker discusses

Alabama football is in a good spot to make an SEC Championship Game appearance this season.

First, the Crimson Tide needs to take care of its schedule and beat Oklahoma and Auburn to close out the regular season. Plus it will need a little help from Missouri winning one more game. If those two things happen, Alabama should make the conference title game in Atlanta, according to this unofficial SEC tiebreaker calculator. There are also a few other scenarios, but that’s probably the simplest.

The likelihood of an Alabama making another appearance in the SEC Championship Game has raised an interesting question: Is it a good thing or bad thing for the Crimson Tide?

If Alabama wins the conference title, it’s most definitely a good thing. It would not only win the SEC, but the Crimson Tide would also secure a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff.

The possibility of losing the conference title game is where things get uncertain. Alabama would pick up a third loss; Would the CFP committee penalize the Crimson Tide and knock it out of the 12-team field? Maybe, maybe not. Or would it be better to avoid the conference championship game, and the possibility of a third loss, on a weekend when many teams aren’t playing?

Alabama captain Tyler Booker was asked about the subject during his weekly appearance on “The Next Round” Monday.

“First and foremost, we’re super focused on Oklahoma this week,” Booker said. “That’s what we’re worried about. But our program values, our pyramid of success, there’s no ifs, ands or buts about it that Alabama wants to be in the SEC championship (game), and when we get there, we want to win it. That’s what you’re measured by. In our indoor facility, there is a bunch of numbers on each side of the wall. One of those numbers are national championships and the other numbers are SEC championships. So we definitely want to play in the SEC championship. There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it.”

Alabama has won 30 SEC titles all time, including a season ago when former coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide beat Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs in Atlanta.
