Documentary on Birmingham-Southern drawing interest from streaming services, says producer

The documentary film crew following the Birmingham-Southern baseball team is one of the fascinating angles of the larger story this week here at the Division III Baseball World Series.

The Birmingham-Southern baseball team is playing in the World Series as the school closes down back in Alabama. The first day of the tournament here in Eastlake, Ohio, is the last official day of the liberal arts college. If Birmingham-Southern wins it all it’s like a Disney movie, but win or lose it’s a multi-layered drama that’s perfect for television.

Jason Sciavicco is the executive producer of the documentary. He produced “Two-A-Days” for MTV. Sciavicco said on Thursday that several major streaming services are interested in the documentary on Birmingham-Southern. Picking the best one might come down to which one gives the documentary the most “global reach,” according to Sciavicco.

That’s incredible news for Birmingham-Southern and its alums, who have been inspired by the heart of the baseball team after so much bad news. Birmingham-Southern fell into financial trouble over the past few years. The school thought it would be saved by the state and city governments, but a deal fell through in March.

That’s when the baseball team started winning. The Panthers were 13-10 before news of the shut down and are 19-4 ever since. They play their first game in the D-III Baseball World Series at 3:45 p.m. CT on Friday at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.

The film crew had eight people with Birmingham-Southern for the super regionals, but now has grown to 15. It’s a large crew but they’ve been respectful of the team and so much so that it’s easy to sometimes forget that they’re around. It’s a professional operation.

Sciavicco has an eye for a great story, and he’s bringing some welcomed publicity to Birmingham-Southern College here in the final days of the school. The team is thrilled to have the documentary crew tagging along to tell their story.

“It’s like the script is writing itself,” Sciavicco said. “It’s going to make a great doc no matter what happens this week.”
