Dispute between customer, Pita Stop owner on Birmingham’s Southside leads to deadly gunfire

A dispute between a customer and a worker at the Pita Stop on Birmingham’s Southside ended in deadly gunfire Saturday.

The shooting happened just after 12 p.m. at the restaurant in the 1100 block of 12th Street South.

The preliminary investigation indicates a customer was unhappy with the food and got into a fight with the restaurant owner. The fight got out of control, and the owner then shot the customer.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said the customer was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The owner has been detained.

It is the second deadly shooting in the city in Iess than 12 hours.

Just before 3 a.m. Saturday, gunfire in Birmingham’s popular Lakeview District left one person dead and another injured.

That shooting happened just before 3 a.m. Saturday in the 700 block of 29th Street.

This afternoon’s victim is Birmingham’s 130th homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and nine others have been ruled justified.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 181 homicides, including the 130 in Birmingham.
