DeVonta Smith setting records for Eagles now

In the first game of the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2022 season, wide receiver DeVonta Smith did not catch a pass. In the final game of the Eagles’ 2022 regular-season schedule on Sunday, Smith’s first catch will set a franchise single-season record for the most receptions by a wide receiver.

The former Alabama All-American will take one of the 2022 NFL season’s three three-game streaks of 110 receiving yards into Sunday’s contest against the New York Giants. Wide receivers Davante Adams of the Las Vegas Raiders and Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings posted the other two three-game streaks in 2022.

“Just making the most of my opportunities,” Smith said. “When they come, make the most of them. Keep coming in every day getting 1 percent better.”

With 88 receptions for 1,129 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022, Smith is tied with Irving Fryar for the Philadelphia record for receptions by a wide receiver. Fryar had 88 receptions for 1,195 yards and 11 touchdowns in 1996. (Tight end Zach Ertz holds the franchise single-season receptions record with 116 in 2018, and running back Brian Westbrook caught 90 passes in 2007.)

Smith joined the Eagles as the 10th choice in the 2021 NFL Draft after winning the Heisman Trophy in 2020, and he set a franchise rookie record with 916 receiving yards.

Smith’s first reception on Sunday also will set a franchise record for the most in a player’s first two seasons. Smith is tied with former Madison Academy star Jordan Matthews, who had 152 receptions in 2014 and 2015 for Philadelphia.

Smith is 13 yards away from DeSean Jackson’s franchise record for receiving yards in a player’s first two seasons. Jackson had 2,068 in 2008 and 2009.

Smith has been able to pile up his numbers this season even though the Eagles added two-time 1,000-yard receiver A.J. Brown during the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft by trading the 18th and 101st selections to the Tennessee Titans.

Brown has caught 84 passes for 1,401 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2022, forming with Smith Philadelphia’s first 1,000-yard tandem.

“It’s been fun. It’s a blessing,” Smith said. “We both come out here and try to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. Learning from each other. Things he has in his game that I take from him, things that I have in my game that he takes from me. Just going out there, making each other better, feeding off each other’s energy. …

“I think it’s been exactly what we both envisioned. Just going out there, like I said, feeding off each other’s energy. You see one guy make a play, the other one’s going to come right behind him making another one.”

Smith has caught 17 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns in the past two games even though quarterback Jalen Hurts missed both contests because of a sprained shoulder.

The Eagles hope Hurts will be back under center on Sunday. But if the quarterback is Hurts or backup Gardner Minshew, Smith said closing the regular season with a victory “still comes down to use executing.”

The Giants and Eagles kick off at 3:25 p.m. CST Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. CBS affiliates in Alabama are scheduled to televise the game.

A victory would give the Eagles the NFC East title, the No. 1 seed in the conference playoffs, a first-round bye next week and homefield advantage on one side of the Super Bowl tournament.
