DeVonta Smith becomes first Alabama alumnus with Super Bowl TD reception
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith became the first Alabama alumnus to catch a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl on Sunday, and former Crimson Tide teammate Jalen Hurts was on the other end of the throw.
The Philadelphia defense had just stopped Kansas City with a fourth-and-5 incompletion at the Chiefs 46-yard line.
Rather than sit on a 27-point lead with 2:47 left in the third quarter of Super Bowl LIX, Hurts targeted Smith running for the end zone and connected with the Slim Reaper as he hit the goal line to give Philadelphia a 34-0 lead with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter.
While Smith’s TD reception was the first for a former Alabama player in the Super Bowl, Hurts’ pass was the second-longest touchdown pass by a former Crimson Tide quarterback in the 59-year history of the contest.
The only longer play for a touchdown by a former Alabama QB was a 62-yarder from Bart Starr to end Boyd Dowler in the Green Bay Packers’ 33-14 victory over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl II on Jan. 14, 1968.
