Detroit Tigers acquire former Alabama high school, UAB standout in MLB trade
The Milwaukee Brewers traded outfielder Brewer Hicklen to the Detroit Tigers for cash considerations, the National League team announced on Friday.
The Brewers had designated Hicklen for assignment on Thursday as they set their roster for Opening Day. After acquiring the former Huntsville High School and UAB standout from Milwaukee, the Tigers assigned Hicklen to their Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens.
Hicklen has played in nine Major League games – six with the Kansas Royals in 2022 and three with the Brewers in 2024. He is 0-for-9 with one run and one stolen base in his MLB career.
A two-sport standout at Huntsville High School, Hicklen had played two seasons at UAB when Kansas City chose him in the seventh round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft. The MLB opportunity ended Hicklen’s plans to play football as a wide receiver for the Blazers, too, during the 2017 season.
Hicklen hit .308 in his two seasons at UAB, with 80 runs, 19 doubles, 10 triples, 11 home runs and 39 stolen bases in 107 games.
In 692 minor-league games, Hicklen has a .259 batting average with 112 home runs and 230 stolen bases.
