Detroit Lions RB duo: ‘If y’all keep talking about Dr. Robotnik in the film room’

The Detroit Lions will try to win their ninth game in a row when they kick off the NFL’s Thanksgiving tripleheader against the Chicago Bears.

The NFL’s highest scoring team with an average of 32.7 points per game, the Lions have been powered by a running-back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.

Along the way, the running backs picked up the nicknames of Sonic and Knuckles, with Gibbs as Sonic and Montgomery as Knuckles. CBS has used the running backs’ video-game alter egos in a promo for its coverage of Thursday’s game, which kicks off at 11:30 a.m. CST at Ford Field in Detroit.

The running backs came to Detroit last season – Gibbs from Alabama as the 12th selection in the 2023 NFL Draft and Montgomery from Chicago as a free-agent signee.

They sparked the Lions to the franchise’s first appearance in the NFC Championship Game since the 1991 season, and Detroit has followed with 10 victories in 11 games this season.

In the Lions’ 24-6 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Gibbs ran for two touchdowns and Montgomery ran for one, which boosted their season totals to 10 and 11, respectively, rushing touchdowns.

That made Gibbs and Montgomery the first running-back teammates in NFL history to rush for at least 10 touchdowns apiece in consecutive seasons, and Detroit still has six games remaining on its regular-season schedule.
