‘Desperate Housewives’ star dies at 71 after cancer battle

Emmy winning actress Valerie Mahaffey has died at age 71, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Mahaffey’s publicist told the news site that the actress, known for her roles on “Desperate Housewives,” “Northern Exposure” and “Young Sheldon,” died in Los Angeles after a battle with cancer.

Mahaffey was born June 16, 1953, in Indonesia and moved to Texas when she was 11, according to The Reporter.

She was known for playing eccentric recurring characters like the hypochondriac wife of Adam Arkin’s character on five episodes of “Northern Exposure,” for which she received a supporting actress Emmy in 1992.

On “Desperate Housewives,” she portrayed the manipulative Alma Hodge over eight episodes.

On Facebook, Mahaffey’s daughter Alice wrote, “I don’t really have the words to say right now. Cancer sucks. I’ll look for you in all the fun moments of life. I know that’s where you’ll be.”
