Derrick Henry not a top-5 running back, NFL peers say

Derrick Henry is at the Pro Bowl Games this week after leading the NFL in rushing attempts, finishing as the runner-up for the rushing crown and tying for second in rushing touchdowns during the 2022 regular season.

Henry rebounded from the 2021 campaign, when he missed more than half the season and still finished ninth in league in rushing yards, to run for 1,538 yards and 13 touchdowns on 349 carries. The former Alabama All-American also reached career highs with 33 receptions for 398 yards as he finished second in the NFL in yards from scrimmage.

That came after Henry led the league in rushing in 2019 and 2020, recording one of the NFL’s eight 2,000-yard seasons in the latter campaign.

But Henry is not one of the best five running backs in the NFL, at least according to his peers.

After the 2022 season, the NFL Players Association released its first all-star selections. The Players All-Pro team was selected by the players, but they voted only for their position group and the groups that they line up against on the field.

In addition to the first Players All-Pro team revealed last month, the NFLPA released the top five in the voting at each position.

The Players All-Pro running back was Josh Jacobs. The former Alabama standout led the NFL with 1,653 rushing yards and 2,053 yards from scrimmage in the 2022 season.

Jacobs was followed in the top five of the players voting at running back by the Cleveland Browns’ Nick Chubb in second, the Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Pollard in third, the San Francisco 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey in fourth and the New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley in fifth.

Fourteen players from Alabama high schools and colleges were on the original rosters for the Pro Bowl Games, and, like Henry, four others did not finish in the top five of the players voting at their positions – Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs (Alabama), Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey (Hoover, Alabama), New York Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley (Theodore, Alabama) and Minnesota Vikings outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith (Greenville).

Four players with Alabama football roots made the Players All-Pro team by leading the voting at their positions – Jacobs, Pittsburgh Steelers free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (Alabama), Washington Commanders special-teamer Jeremy Reaves (South Alabama) and Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II (Alabama).

They were all selected for the Pro Bowl Games, too, as were:

· Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen (Alabama), who finished fourth in the players voting.

· Philadelphia Eagles left guard Landon Dickerson (Alabama), who finished fourth in the players voting.

· Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (West Alabama), who finished fourth in the players voting.

· Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (Alabama), who finished third in the players voting.

· New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (Wenonah, Alabama), who finished third in the players voting.

Two players with Alabama football roots finished in the top two (and No. 1 in their conference) in the voting for the Players All-Pro team – Las Vegas Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson (Auburn) at No. 2 and New England Patriots punt returner Marcus Jones (Enterprise, Troy) at No. 2.

The Pro Bowl Games started on Thursday night and will conclude on Sunday. The remaining event list includes the Best Catch finale, Gridiron Gauntlet, Kick Tac Toe, Move the Chains and three flag-football games. The Pro Bowl Games will be televised by ESPN from 2 to 5 p.m. CST Sunday from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
