Derrick Henry gets it done through the air for Titans

Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry has made a name for himself carrying the football across the goal line.

The former Alabama All-American is one of the six players in NFL history with 10 or more rushing touchdowns in six seasons, and Henry has done so in six consecutive campaigns, including 2023.

Henry ranks 15th in NFL history with 88 rushing touchdowns.

But Henry’s part in Tennessee’s first touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday came through the air as he threw the fourth TD pass of his NFL career and second one this season.

Only three other players in NFL history who have rushed for more than 75 touchdowns also have thrown for at least four touchdowns, and all are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame – Marcus Allen, Walter Payton and LaDainian Tomlinson.

Henry took a handoff from quarterback Ryan Tannehill, pulled up behind the line of scrimmage and flipped the football to tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo in the end zone with 14:14 left in the first half for the first points of Sunday’s game.

The touchdown pass was the longest of Henry’s career. He had a 5-yard TD pass to tight end MyCole Pruitt in a 27-3 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 24, 2021, a 3-yard TD pass to tight end Austin Hooper in a 27-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 17, 2022, and a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Josh Whyle in a 27-3 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 1, 2023.

Henry also threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Corey Davis in a 28-12 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Jan. 11, 2019. That TD pass came in the AFC playoffs, so it doesn’t count in Henry’s career statistics.

In his career, Henry has completed 7-of-9 passes for 37 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions, plus the TD pass in the playoffs.
