Derrick Henry changing teams after 8 seasons with Titans

With their top running back heading for the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency, the Baltimore Ravens are bringing in Derrick Henry for their backfield.

The former Alabama All-American reaches the end of four-year, $50 million contract with the Tennessee Titans at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday and will join the Ravens for a two-year, $16 million deal, NFL Network and ESPN reported on Tuesday. The contract could be worth up to $20 million if incentives are met and includes $9 million of guaranteed money.

In discussing his impending free agency after the 2023 season, Henry said he would prioritize his championship chances when deciding where to play in 2024.

“I want to be somewhere, whatever happens, that gives me the best shot of winning the Super Bowl,” Henry said. “The business side is the business side. At the end of the day, it has to make sense. I’m just not going to accept anything at the same time, because it’s a long season. We put our bodies through a lot.

“But at the same time, I definitely want to be on a roster that can go out there and put ourselves in position and be able to win games and get in the playoffs and contend for a ring.”

Baltimore posted the NFL’s best regular-season record in 2023 at 13-4. The Ravens lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 17-10 in the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 28.

In 2023, Henry led the NFL in rushing attempts for the fourth time in his career with 280. He ran for 1,167 yards and 12 touchdowns as he finished second in the NFL in rushing for the second straight season.

Gus Edwards was Baltimore’s top running back in 2023, when he ran for 810 yards and 13 touchdowns on 198 carries. The free agent agreed to a two-year, $6.5 million contract with the Chargers on Monday.

The Titans obtained Henry in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft after he won the Heisman Trophy for Alabama’s 2015 CFP national-championship team.

Henry had led Tennessee in rushing for seven consecutive seasons and topped the NFL in 2019 and 2020. In the latter campaign, he became the eighth player in NFL history to run for 2,000 yards in one season.

Henry is a four-time Pro Bowler and was the first-team All-Pro running back in 2020.

In 119 regular-season games with Tennessee, Henry ran for 9,502 yards and a franchise-record 90 touchdowns on 2,030 carries, caught 155 passes for 1,458 yards and three touchdowns and completed 7-of-9 passes for 37 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

In seven playoff games, Henry ran for 732 yards and four touchdowns on 156 carries, caught 13 passes for 88 yards and completed his only pass for a touchdown.
