Derrick Henry breaks Alabamaâs NFL rushing record
Derrick Henry doesn’t know where he’ll be playing next season, so for the last game of his contract with Tennessee, Henry ran onto the field blowing kisses to the cheering crowd at Nissan Stadium in Nashville before the Titans’ 2023 finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
And if the game was Henry’s swan song with Tennessee after eight seasons, the former Alabama All-American went out in record-breaking style with his most productive showing of the year.
By rushing for 153 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries in the Titans’ 28-20 victory, Henry overtook Shaun Alexander to become the player from an Alabama high school or college with the most NFL rushing yards.
Also a former Crimson Tide standout, Alexander had 9,453 yards and 100 touchdowns on 2,187 carries during his NFL career from 2000 through 2008.
Henry now has 9,502 yards and 90 touchdowns on 2,030 carries since joining Tennessee in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
Henry surpassed Alexander on his 11th rushing attempt on Sunday – a 69-yard run that was his longest carry of the season.
Henry ranks 36th for rushing yards in NFL history. He not only passed Alexander on the all-time rushing list on Sunday, but also Earl Campbell, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
