Derick Hall shares fond memories of Auburn during the Senior Bowl

Derick Hall will wear the Auburn helmet for the last time on Saturday when he suits up in Mobile for the Reese’s Senior Bowl. He’s going through a week of practice with some of the best college football players in America, hoping to be selected in the 2023 National Football League Draft.

Hall is gearing up for his future while reminiscing on his time playing on the Plains.

“There isn’t anything I don’t miss about Auburn,” Hall said. “I still have my house there. I still go back. I love being in the city. I’m forever indebted to that place until I die because of what it’s done for me, and I’m thankful for how the community embraced my family. I’m grateful for the man Auburn helped me become. I’m an Auburn Tiger for life.”

The last two seasons weren’t ideal for Auburn, with former Bryan Harsin’s tenure ending in 19 games. However, Hall was one of the leaders that kept his teammates focused on positive outcomes. He fondly remembers how Cadillac Williams rallied the troops when the school named the former All-American and NFL All-Pro runningback as interim coach.

“His energy and compassion and the vibes that he brought to the team when things went awry was everything to us,” Hall said. “He was there for us when we didn’t have any answers. He reminded us that ball is still ball no matter what else is happening. Auburn loves Coach Caddy, and Coach Caddy loves Auburn.”

Reuniting with Eku Leota on the field is another benefit for Hall playing in the Senior Bowl. Leota’s season ended with a should injury after four games. He credited Hall for helping him stay focused during the recovery and rehab.

“It’s been a blessing to play with my brother one more time,” Leota said. “He helped me keep my head lifted high when I was going through some rough times. I’m very thankful for our friendship.”

Hall grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi, which is around 70 miles away from Mobile, where the game will take place on South Alabama’s campus. He watched the game as a fan in 2016 when Dak Prescott was a senior at Mississippi State and won the MVP before getting drafted by the Cowboys.

The EDGE rusher is looking forward to playing in front of family and friends.

“Family is everything to me,” Hall said. “My family comes to every game. They’ve traveled to Penn State, and everywhere we’ve played. This is an easy drive over for them and I can’t wait to play in this game.”
