Denver Broncos add former Crimson Tide assistant, Alabama prep coach to staff
The Denver Broncos’ coaching staff for the 2025 season includes a former Alabama assistant who comes to the NFL as the head coach of Tuscaloosa County High School.
Among the eight new members announced by the Broncos for coach Sean Payton’s staff on Thursday was Brian Niedermeyer, who has joined Denver as a defensive quality-control coach.
Niedermeyer was a graduate assistant at Alabama in 2016 and the Crimson Tide’s assistant director of recruiting operations in 2017.
In the 2024 season, Niedermeyer worked as the defensive coordinator at Tuscaloosa County. He had been named the head coach for the Wildcats on Dec. 10.
Between Alabama and Tuscaloosa County, Niedermeyer coached at Tennessee and the Florida prep programs St. Thomas Aquinas and IMG Academy.
Niedermeyer followed Jeremy Pruitt to Tennessee when the Crimson Tide defensive coordinator became the Volunteers’ head coach in 2018.
Pruitt, Niedermeyer and outside-linebackers coach Shelton Felton were fired for cause on Jan. 18, 2021, after an internal investigation discovered what University of Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman termed “a significant number of serious NCAA rules violations.”
The Broncos are coming off their first playoff season since 2015. Denver posted a 10-7 regular-season record in 2024 before falling to the Buffalo Bills 31-7 in the first round of the AFC playoffs on Jan. 12.
The Broncos defense gave up the third-fewest points and the seventh-fewest yards in the NFL in 2024. Denver led the league with 63 sacks.
