Demolition begins on Tuscaloosa’s landmark Moon Winx Lodge

A nearly-century old reminder of Tuscaloosa’s past is being demolished.

The Moon Winx Lodge, once home to a distinctive sign featuring a winking crescent moon, is being torn down, according to social media and Tuscaloosa Thread.

The motel, a long-time fixture on University Boulevard East in Tuscaloosa, was shut down back in March after an inspection and being cited for multiple health code violations.

The motel on University Boulevard East in Tuscaloosa was doing business without a license, had guests that stayed longer than 30 days and cited for issues with its guest records.

The owner at that time was trying to find a buyer for the 28-room motel.

The motel, which opened in the late 1920s, installed the sign in 1957. It was sold earlier this year, according to WBRC.

In 2016, owner Jay Patel told AL.com that he was looking to sell the motel’s well-known sign, noting that it breaks once a month and costs $300 each time to fix.

In 2015, AL.com asked readers to make a list of Alabama things they would miss the most if they were gone. The Moon Winx Lodge sign made that list.
