Demolition begins on Birmingham’s Highland Plaza, to make way for multi-use development

A storied Birmingham shopping center is currently being demolished to make room for a new multi-use development.

Highland Plaza, once home to Western Supermarket, Hot and Hot Fish Club, Highland Package Store, and Taj India, among other businesses across more than eight decades, is being bulldozed to make way for a new development from Daniel Corporation. It has been a fixture of Birmingham’s retail culture since the late 1930s.

The Birmingham City Council voted in February to approve re-zoning of the site at 2230 Highland Ave. South for mixed-use development, such as apartments, retail and office space.

The complex, to be called The James, will feature 272 luxury apartment units, a 373-space parking garage and 10,000 square feet of retail and office space.

The building on 2.59 acres will be 68 feet tall and include an outdoor pool and courtyard.

City officials say the retail space that will be on the ground floor of the new complex will have room for businesses, such as restaurants, once it is completed.

A Daniel Corporation spokesperson said further information on plans for The James will be forthcoming.
