Democrats mock Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Gulf of America bill: ‘I think ‘Saturday Night Live’ just called’
House Democrats on Thursday said a bill authored by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., that would codify the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America was beyond parody.
One congressman turned to improv to make his point when his phone rang.
“I think ‘Saturday Night Live’ just called me,” said Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md. “They want me on.”
Hoyer criticized Greene and House Republicans for prioritizing the bill at a time when the economy is shrinking, costs are rising and Americans are concerned about their financial situations.
“They’re happy, of course, about Gulf of America,” he said. “That’ll do it.”
Greene’s Gulf of America Act would codify President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America into law.
On Thursday, the bill passed the House by a vote of 211-206.
“This is such an important thing to do for the American people.” Greene said.
“The American people deserve pride in their country and they deserve pride in the waters that we own, that we protect with our military and our coast guard. And all of the businesses that prosper along these waters.”
Democrats are “outraged” about the bill, according to Greene, because “they love the cartels more than any other people in the world, more than the American people.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., called the bill a “silly, small-minded and sycophantic piece of legislation.
“When the American people woke up this morning, they could reasonably ask the question, ‘what are their elected representatives doing on the floor of the House of Representatives going to be debating?’
“In an environment where the Trump tariffs are costing them thousands of dollars more per year, Republicans are crashing the economy in real time, costs are being raised on hard-working American taxpayers and Republicans are driving us toward a painful recession, what might members of Congress under this temporary Republican majority be debating on the floor today?” Jeffries asked.
“Would it be legislation about the economy? Something about health care? Anything on Social Security? … No, what Republicans have decided to spend this entire legislative day doing is to debate a bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico.”
