Democrat eyeing White House in 2028: ‘Most people would agree’ Biden shouldn’t have run

A top contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination said “most people would agree” that Joe Biden should not have run for re-election, but said Democrats should focus on the future instead of dwelling on the past.

“You know, right now, with the benefit of hindsight, I think most people would agree that that’s the case,” Pete Buttigieg told reporters after a VoteVets Town Hall in Iowa on Tuesday, according to the Des Moines Register.

“We’re also not in a position to wallow in hindsight. We’ve got to get ready for some fundamental tests of the future of this country and this party, some of which are going on this very year, many of which will come next year.”

Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who vied for the 2020 Democratic nomination before becoming secretary of transportation in the Biden administration, is considered one of the leading candidates for the 2028 nomination.

Buttigieg brushed aside the speculation.

“Right now, I’m not running for anything,” he said, according to the Register. “And part of what’s exciting and compelling about an opportunity like this is to be campaigning for values and for ideas, rather than a specific electoral campaign.”

Biden launched a re-election campaign but then abandoned the effort in the summer following a disastrous debate with Donald Trump that included several stumbles and missteps.

Democrats rallied around Vice President Kamala Harris as their new nominee.

Harris was resoundingly defeated by Trump in November.
