DeMarcus Cousins to play with Taiwan Beer Leopards
Former NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins has signed to play for the Taiwan Beer Leopards, the basketball team announced on Monday.
The Beer Leopards represent Taoyuan City in Taiwan’s six-team T1 League.
ESPN reported Cousins had signed to play four games over a 10-day period for the team. The team’s Facebook account indicated Cousins would be available for home games on Jan. 20, 21, 27 and 28.
“Excited to come over and put on a show for you all,” Cousins said to Beer Leopards fans in a video posted by the team. “Come catch me at a game soon.”
Cousins’ most recent NBA appearance came on April 27, 2022, when he scored 19 points in the Denver Nuggets’ season-ending 102-98 loss to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
The former LeFlore High School star was the fifth player picked in the 2010 NBA Draft after one season at Kentucky. Cousins earned selection for the NBA All-Star Game in 2015, 2016 and 2017 as a member of the Sacramento Kings and in 2018 while playing for the New Orleans Pelicans. He also won a gold medal in men’s basketball playing for the U.S. team at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
On Jan. 26, 2018, Cousins suffered a torn Achilles tendon in his left leg while playing for New Orleans.
Cousins did not return to the court until Jan. 18, 2019, and played in 30 regular-season games with the Golden State Warriors. In the postseason for the first time in his NBA career, Cousins suffered a torn quadriceps in the second game of Golden State’s first-round series. He overcame the injury to return in the third game of the NBA Finals, but the Warriors lost to the Toronto Raptors in seven games in the league championship series.
The Los Angeles Lakers signed Cousins on July 6, 2019. But he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament on Aug. 19, 2019. The Lakers released Cousins on Feb. 23, 2020, before he could make it back to the court, and he did not play during the 2019-20 season.
In the 2020-21 season, Cousins played in 25 games with the Houston Rockets and 16 with the Los Angeles Clippers in the regular season.
In the 2021-22 season, Cousins played in 17 games with Milwaukee Bucks and 31 regular-season and five playoff games with the Nuggets.
In 654 NBA regular-season games, Cousins averaged 19.6 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.1 blocks in 29.8 minutes. The only player in NBA history to have a higher scoring average than Cousins while averaging fewer than 30 minutes on the floor per game is former J.F. Shields High School star John Drew, who averaged 20.7 points in 29.5 minutes per game in 739 NBA regular-season games.
