Delete this app now: App on Google Play Store found spying on 50,000 users, experts warn

Security experts are urging people to delete a screen recording app that was available on the Google Play Store.

Researchers at cybersecurity company ESET said the “trojanized Android app,” has more than 50,000 installs from the Google Play Store, Metro reported. The app, named “iRecorder – Screen Recorder,” – was launched in 2021. However, in August 2022, malicious code was included in the app to enable it to spy on users.

“Initially, the iRecorder app did not have any harmful features. What is quite uncommon is that the application received an update containing malicious code quite a few months after its launch,” said Lukas Stefanko, an ESET researcher.

The app has since been removed from Google Play.

The malicious app is capable of recording audio from the device’s microphone and stealing files. It was also capable of capturing files with extensions allowing it to save web pages, images, audio, video and document files.

Users who uploaded the app prior to malicious features being added could have added them if they updated the app.

ESET said it has not found any concrete evidence attributing the app to a particular group or individual cybercriminal.

If you have downloaded the app, it’s recommended you remove immediately.
